News: Police station evacuated over fear of live hand grenade

A police station in Lincolnshire was evacuated after a suspected hand grenade was handed in by a member of the public.

Spalding police station was evacuated after a member of the public discovered what appeared to be a hand grenade at their home around 11.20am this morning.

They took it to the nearby station as a precaution.

Police took the decision to evacuate the premises until the arrival of Explosive Ordinance Department team to examine the item.

Properties within 100 metres of the station were also evacuated and the B1172 was also closed running through the town.

The Explosive Ordinance Department team later identified the grenade as a dummy.

 

A police statement said: “At about 11.20 this morning (Sunday) a member of the public who had found what appears to be a hand grenade at home took it to nearby Spalding Police Station. 

“OD tell us that the item is a dummy so the cordons are  being lifted and any people who left their homes, returning, including the staff at Spalding Police Station – apologies for any inconvenience  but better to be safe than sorry!”
